Michel Francois

Michel François is a French potter, working in Cornwall.

Using the finest porcelain as well as Cornish clay, he throws, turns, glazes and fires in a traditional way, including 'Reduction Firing'; much like the ancient Korean and Chinese potters did. Passionate about tea, he spent 6 years researching, devising fine tea ware for both Chinese and Japanese tea.

Before turning to pottery he has been a sculptor, in bronze, marble, and in public art.
Previously he worked at the Leach Pottery in St Ives.

He prepares his clay by foot, then by hand, using a 'spiral wedge' method to give it life and an organic structure.  His work is high fired to stoneware temperatures of up to 1300° and reduction fired to bring out the magical interaction between clay and glaze.
